Is my institution eligible to connect?
The Department of Information Technology & Telecom (DITT) under Ministry of Information & Communications is participating in ongoing “TEIN eduroam Project 2018”. The project is supporting 8 countries. Under this project, DrukREN shall become the National Roaming Operator (NRO) for eduroam service in Bhutan and will connect at least 3 educational institutions.
DITT, MoIC will also develop eduroam National to determine eligibility for eduroam identity provider participation in Bhutan.
As eduroam is a global identity federation, eligible institutions must also satisfy several pre-requisites to connect to eduroam. These are:
- Effective Identity Management (for an eduroam IdP);
- Effective wireless networking, with IEEE 802.1x capable wireless infrastructure;
- Published network access ‘acceptable use policy’ (AUP);
- IT infrastructure capability sufficient to deploy and sustainably operate a RADIUS server;
- IT Support capability to provide support to eduroam users.
How do institutions connect to eduroam?
DrukREN will allow participation of educational institutes, based on the eduroam National Policy, in eduroam as an identity provider and service provider or as a service provider only. Service providers need to configure their wireless infrastructure to broadcast the “eduroam” SSID, and to authenticate users associating with the “eduroam” network using a standard called “IEEE 802.1x”. The authentication server will look at the ‘institutionalRealm’ and decide whether to authenticate user locally or forward it to national proxy server.
We will also encourage participation of Service Providers only. In order to provide eduroam at your conference or event or public places, you need to have your own equipment with an appropriate feature set for your deployment needs. In generic terms, the WiFi equipment for your event or conference needs to support the following standard for use with eduroam:
- IEEE 802.11i Enterprise (WPA2/AES with RADIUS authentication)
- a separate SSID named “eduroam” (without the quotes)
